Urban development and the preservation of natural ecology do not have to be at odds with each other. The Shenzhen Universiade World project showcases a new possibility, reshaping our traditional perceptions of urban development.

Leveraging the existing infrastructure of the Universiade Sports Centre built for the 2011 26th Summer Universiade, this project spans 520,000 sqm in Shenzhen’s Longgang District. Its goal is to create a highly permeable organic urban network. The Oval Partnership spearheaded the overall planning, using “Universiade Scroll” design concept to connect the “one venue, two halls” layout with neighbouring communities. The project features multifunctional zones—shopping streets, fitness parks, town squares, a waterfront promenade and ecological areas with lake views. It seamlessly integrates culture, sports, tourism and commerce, blurring boundaries between commercial zones, recreational areas and green spaces to establish an open environment where nature intertwines with the cityscape.

Universiade World employs a zoning approach that is dynamic in the south, tranquil in the north, and united through the central plaza. This space facilitates the transition between ambiences, linking commercial activities with natural landscapes like lakeside areas and tree-lined boardwalks. This enhances commercial experiences with an immersive setting. Inner streets offer a relaxed, “living room-style” atmosphere, while the East, Central and West Plazas accommodate cultural, tourism and commercial needs. From festive events and art installations to artisan markets, the site demonstrates urban spaces’ multifunctionality and resilience.

Nature and ecology are central to Universiade World’s development. This project preserves native trees and capitalises on Shenzhen Universiade i-Park’s natural landscape, merging ecological resources with commercial elements to create a flowing green eco-space. By opening up the waterfront area, it optimises connectivity between indoor and outdoor spaces. Visitors can enjoy lakeside dining and intimate experiences by the water, where commercial activities and natural ecology coexist harmoniously, allowing urbanites to experience nature within the city.

At Universiade World, connections are key: bridging old and new urban layouts, linking urban functions with nature, and fostering deeper connections within oneself. Here, every step is a harmonious dialogue between city and nature.
