Cultural preservation and heritage play a vital role in urban development. In Shanghai’s Xuhui District, Longhua Town is witnessing a revival of historic buildings and traditional culture. The Oval Partnership spearheaded the planning and architectural design of the Shanghai Longhua project, honouring the local temple fair tradition through modern commercial spaces that celebrate cultural heritage.
Project Overview
Located opposite the millennium-old Longhua Temple, the project includes the Longhua Hui commercial block to the south and the office blocks to the north. The design centres around Longhua Pagoda, with the “Longhua Scroll” unfolding along the main avenue to evoke the bustling scenes of ancient temple fairs in a modern context. River-view alleyways create a tranquil atmosphere reminiscent of old Jiangnan water towns, contrasting with the vibrant Longhua Scroll. The promenade along Longhua River provides a spacious waterfront area for sightseeing and relaxation, while the northern zone features outdoor dining to enhance the commercial atmosphere.
Architectural Design and Colour Palette
The architecture’s colour selection pays homage to Chinese artistic traditions, utilising the layered concept of “Five Shades of Ink in Chinese Paintings” to reflect the traditional Jiangnan palette. Open retail areas along the Longhua Scroll use subtle colour tones to enhance transparency and expansiveness. In contrast, deep ink hues in areas like the waterfront promenade convey privacy and serenity.
Distinctive Architectural Elements
The project incorporates traditional Jiangnan elements such as domes, flying eaves, and arched bridges, and blends them with contemporary design aesthetics. By using new technologies and materials, traditional craftsmanship is thoughtfully woven into the modern design. Decorative roof tiles and brick frames add intricate details to the facades.
Visitor Experience
Longhua Hui features low-rise buildings with viewing platforms for scenic views of Longhua Pagoda. Rest areas and green spaces are interspersed throughout, with escalators connecting different levels. The sunken plaza allows access to various parts of the mall, catering to both young visitors and the elderly, and making it a popular destination for a mini urban getaway.
Cultural Significance
Longhua has witnessed the splendid evolution of Longhua Temple Fair over thousands of years, blending folk culture, markets, and entertainment. It embodies Jiangnan culture, Chinese red culture, and Shanghai’s unique Haipai culture. The Shanghai Longhua project builds on these traditions, incorporating ancient aesthetics into modern architectural design for a fresh and contemporary look.
